Indonesia optimistic about accession as full member of OECD

Joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is a calculated decision that could hasten Indonesia’s economic transformation and aid in the accomplishment of national strategic goals. In an attempt to obtain OECD permanent membership, Indonesia has stepped up its efforts. A recent working visit by a group from the Office of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs to the OECD headquarters in Paris on November 3 was a major step in this direction. Under the direction of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, first expressed the government’s interest in full OECD membership in a letter that preceded this visit.

The Indonesian delegation addressed a number of topics during the visit, such as Indonesia’s desire to take part in OECD committees, agencies, and programmes as well as financial considerations related to the country’s pursuit of permanent membership.

The Indonesian government is still coordinating national efforts to gain membership in the OECD. Multiple meetings between the secretary-general of the OECD and ministers of the Indonesian government have served to highlight this commitment.

The Office of the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs’ secretary, Susiwijono Moegiarso, emphasised that ministries pursuing OECD association have been carefully preparing themselves in terms of content and technical coordination to ensure a seamless transition once membership is granted.

He also noted the government’s creation of a national team whose primary responsibility will be organised coordination with regard to the OECD membership process.

Karim Dahou, the OECD’s deputy director for global relations and cooperation, has praised these aggressive steps. He conveyed gratitude for the Indonesian government’s persistent dedication and earnestness in striving for complete participation in the OECD.

The desire of Indonesia to join the OECD shows a strong commitment to accomplishing its strategic objectives and improving its economic standing on the international scene. It is anticipated that this action will have a major positive impact on the country’s economic growth and transformation.
